Okay, you know about the SCA, right? You also know about the the RCMP? Well tonight a friend of mine who heartily enjoys fighting in the SCA came over after an event they just held with the RCMP. It turns out that for the past few years our local contingent of RCMP have been doing riot control training with the local SCA contingent as antagonists. That's right, they all armour up and beat each other with sticks. Apparently this is the biggest turnout event for the local SCA chapter ever---nothing else draws in remotely the same crowd as the opportunity to kick local cops in the nuts. The police in turn very much appreciate the chance to get beat up a lot by people with vastly more experience in the beating up with sticks department.
I sincerely believe they ought to sell tickets to this.

Tim, my friend who was involved, was taking pictures from the middle of the melee and was so cheerful and enthusiastic that get got kicked in the jewels on at least one occasions. Thankfully, a rigid cup is standard for SCA events.
They had a few different scenarios. One was a passive resistance one, which was just a bunch of knights standing around refusing to move while police forcibly moved them. Another was an unruly mob scenario, where the moc was encouraged to throw things at the police and throw 35% force blows and accept hits as "out of action". Another was an amusing "ringleader snatch" which had the RCMP attempting to forcibly detain one of the best fighters in the Lions Gate barony while he was being defended by the rest of the mob. Finally, there was a full force, take no hits riot with smoke grenades and dogs. People were encouraged not to be careful with the dogs and not with the RCMP.
All in all, I think the only way to truly appreciate it is to have been there and I wasn't. :( I am hoping, however, that the top brass thinks it's a good idea and keeps it up. Apparently the SCA is pretty creative tactically and posed a few substantial problems for the RCMP to come up with a tactical response to. A little dose of nearly real life for their otherwise largely theoretical training.

I was there..
Not the recent one mentioned, but one previous to it. The reason why it wasn't in the North Wind (Lions Gate's newsletter) was that it was invite only. Mostly heavies and a few support. The previous one, the one I went to, was tons of fun. :) The police were courteous, and it was interesting to watch what they were doing.

Tatonka V, the event to which you refer was indeed a lot of fun. I should correct some misconceptions, as I was there to enjoy it all. The cops were very courteous, and treated us well- as we did for them. There was a lot of unruly mob stuff, but almost no opportunity to hit them with anything but thrown weapons. apparently, there was supposed to be, but one of them got injured- accidentally in a fall- and they called it off, saying that they had "met their objectives". We had a very stern talk about how to behave, how not to single them out, and specifically how not to hit them. Nut-kicking was not allowed. We were pretty good about it. the dogs only ever touched a proper handler, and only Jarl Hwolf and Sir Oak (now the prince) were ever manhandled by them- in a very staged situation. The draw was not bad for a midweek midday, but to say it was huge is a gross exaggeration. The very inexperienced trainees were from all over the province- not local, and it was a lot of fun to see the fear in their faces. They obviously believed we were crazies. Go figure. A few pics are posted on the Lions Gate site, and some more at www.inkvison.com. Also, rapier folk could have easily been involve din the early, rioting-and-throwing-things stage.Dalibor Krivoklatsky.
ps: Not too sure, but i think Tirain was the only Mc Beign there that day.
